Cheap Steel Shelving Units and Their Drawbacks

There are numerous types of shelving out there on the market.  No matter how many options seem to be available, people seem to be predisposed to buying the cheapest.  Apparently there is something about those cheap $20 metal shelving kits that just scream “buy me!”

Your Shelving Options

I am not sure if people tend to go with these cheaper metal shelves because of price or just simply because they are oblivious to the fact that there are TONS of other options out there.  You no longer have to look second rate when it comes to shelving!

There are plenty of shelving companies that make great home or garage shelving kits that lookgarage before shelves installed aesthetically pleasing without “breaking the bank.”

When I think about cheap metal shelving I think about some of the main drawbacks that they have.  For one, the really cheap metal shelving that we are talking about tends to get mangled and bent over time.  Once this stuff gets bent it has lost any aesthetic value that it once might have possessed.

Secondly, metal shelving can rust over time making it really look out of place.  If you are going to have shelving in your home, you definitely want to have shelving that will look cohesive and flow well with the look of your home.

Patio Surfaces – Stamped Concrete VS. Traditional Paving

Choosing the flooring material for your patio depends on many factors. Personal preference is possibly the most significant factor in choosing between stamped concrete and traditional paving techniques. However, homeowners should also take into account how they intend to use their patio.

People who shuffle their feet while walking, those with balance issues, and anyone who uses a slate patterned stampd concretewheelchair or walker will benefit from having a flat, continuous stamped concrete surface. As techniques and materials improve, more homeowners are finding that they can replicate the look of traditional paving with stamped concrete.

Benefits of Concrete

Homeowners choose concrete because it is durable, versatile, and economical. Stamped concrete is a decorative technique that greatly enhances the look of plain concrete. Skilled craftsmen have the ability to create patterns and textures to rival the looks of cobblestone, brick, flagstone or any one of a number of other different styles.

By adding just the right amount of color, these craftsmen can trick visitors to your patio into believing that you laid down individual pieces, when the reality is that you have a slab of concrete.

Before you start tearing out your bathroom and chiselling your tiles, make sure you have all of laying bathroom floor tilesthe tools that you need. Whilst the number of tools you will need is extensive, we have tried to identify the top 5 tools that you are most likely to need when fitting a bathroom.

Bathroom fitting tool Number 1: The Screw Gun

You will need a screw gun if you are planning on placing screws into dry wall. Interior Design Tips for Smaller Properties

Modern living for a lot of people these days means living in small spaces. As house prices have risen substantially over the past two decades, the struggle to get a foot on the property ladder has meant small flats and houses have become increasingly more appealing.

Once you have found your new pad, the next step is to make it as homely as possible, while making sure there is minimal clutter interior decorand that it’s welcoming for yourself as well as visitors. I know that this can be hard.

The following interior design tips for smaller properties will hopefully help towards making the most of what space you have, and in turn make the space look bigger than it actually is.

1.  Open plan living areas

You should opt for chairs and sofas with small arms or even ones without them to give the illusion that there’s a bit more room. Ensure to position the larger pieces against the walls so they don’t take up more space than is necessary. Bi-fold doors are perfect for bathrooms and kitchens, this is because they only take up half the room of a standard door and the bonus is that they are a quirky design feature in their own right.

2. Open up the room with lighter colours

Darker shades of wallpaper or paint on walls only have the closing in effect in a room, and that can be an awful look for a small living space. Softer tones of cream, greens and browns will provide a brighter and lighter hue. With this you can accessorise with bolder cushions, throws, bed linen, or even in what you choose to put on your wall to decorate your room such as paintings and photography.

3. De-clutter

Be ruthless with your any items which are not necessary. If you don’t using it often, find somewhere to store it. Having a lot going on in a room can make a space look too cluttered, especially in a smaller room. Try using shelves to store your books and music, there are some great options for using curtains to cover shelving. There is a lot of scope to be inventive and use the coordinating material throughout the room to provide a classy look.

4. Don’t over-dress your windows

Big, thick curtains can be an overpowering presence in smaller rooms. Choose roman blinds that provide a clean, straight line on your windows. These blinds are designed to roll up evenly in a stacking fashion when closed but hang straight when open. You can also choose the type of material or fabric and the colour to match with the rest of the room.

5. Let the light in

Allowing as much natural light as possible to flow into a space is the best way to make a room appear bigger. If you don’t have a lot of natural light, additional lighting to corners or, for even on shelving, can create a brighter area when position positioned s in key areas. Of course you should keep your window treatments open during daylight hours for as long as possible.

6. Choose furniture that’s functional

Try to use multi-functional pieces, such as a sofa bed or beds with drawers incorporated in them. Coffee tables that have storage drawers can even reduce the need for open shelves or cupboards.

Setting the Bones of Your Space … Furniture Placement

Furniture placement, especially the largest pieces, should be the first step in an organized design project.  This is where you set the bones of the space and begin to define the direction of the design.

Large pieces include your sectional, sofa, love seat, book cases, television set, dining table, etc…

Assess Your Space

Always start by assessing the space itself. Really look at what you have and think about where you want to go with it. This involves identifying any special features and focal points.  You will want to arrange your furniture so that people can enjoy these.

Draw a  Floor Plan

Next draw up a floor plan: Many furniture stores have free AutoCAD programs that allow you to draw floor plans perfectly to scale. You just need the measurements of the space. It’s easy to save them and print out as many as you like.  If you can’t do the computer route, at least put together a rough hand sketch that shows the length and width of the space plus where the doors and windows are.

Concrete Counter Tops and Vanities – Trendy or Frugal?

For a long time concrete counter tops and vanities were seen as drab, ugly hunks of stone. Now many remodeling projects are including concrete in their plans. This growing trend is due to many advances in concrete finishing, but also economics – finished concrete can be a low cost option compared to some other materials.

Still, is the use of concrete trendy, or is it frugal?

Concrete Colors and Finishes Open Up Thousands of Design Options

The concrete installer has a tremendous number of options when it comes to finish and color. concrete kitchen worktopConcrete’s color pallet is essentially unlimited – by using dyes, stains, or both, concrete counter top installers can create simple solid colors that look like stone, marbling, fades, and more.

In terms of finish, concrete can be treated in such a way that it’s smooth to touch, in addition to the rougher finishes we’re all familiar with.

Concrete can also be inlaid with all glass, stone, tile, sea shells – you name it. Using a variety of tools and techniques, concrete counter tops can be imprinted with patterns or even be monogrammed. Concrete’s greatest advantage in terms of design is simple – it’s a liquid before it becomes solid, which means a lot of amazing things can be done.

Is A Walk-in Shower Enclosure The Right Choice For You?

Getting the most out of your bathroom space is a must for anyone who lives in a small house or apartment.  Having a full sized bathtub can greatly reduce the wall space that is available to you for other items, such as the toilet, sink and bathroom cabinet.

Whilst bath sizes can vary, the standard, or at least most common dimensions, are 1700 x 700mm.  Again, walk-in showers can be found in variety of sizes, but there are two that are considered to be standard.  The first is 1500 x 800mm, which provides a saving of 200mm in terms of wall space, in comparison to having a standard bath in place.

Living in a small bungalow or apartment can be problematic when it comes to interior design.  Whilst we have to be practical and make use of every spare inch of space; we also want our property to be both stylish and welcoming.

The biggest challenge is making sure that the bungalow doesn’t feel cluttered and oppressive. over sink mirror in bathroom This can especially be an issue in the bathroom, with the whole suite squeezed into a tight area.  If you are suffering from such a situation in your bathroom then you could alleviate the problem by introducing a large bathroom mirror.

Most homeowners will of course already have a bathroom mirror installed right above the sink unit.  But could that mirror be bigger?

If you install a mirror that stretches the full length of the wall, you serve to create an optical illusion.  As you look into the mirror the reflection makes it appear is if the room stretches on beyond the wall on which it is mounted.

Needless to say, remodeling your kitchen is a daunting project that requires hours upon hours of thought, planning, and consideration. This can lead to immense wastes of time, loss of money, and an unnecessary stress.

1. Unfocused Remodel

When you’re planning a kitchen remodel, know the entire scope of your project. Basically, know what needs to be changed and what doesn’t. For example, are you just getting new counter tops, or are you also getting new cabinetry and flooring too?

Creating a “needs and wants” list will help give you the overall picture of what your remodel will encompass. Without focusing your plans from the beginning, you run the risk of derailing your remodel with unforeseen complications and a blown budget.

Is Your Builder Ripping You Off?

Whatever you pay for, you expect to get value for money, and home improvements are no exception. However, when you feel you’re being ripped off, you’re entitled to feel angry. However, knowing you’re not getting a great deal isn’t as easy as you might think, especially when hiring a tradesman such as a builder to do work for you.

Unlike if, say, you’ve been served an underwhelming meal at a restaurant, it can be harder to gauge whether you’ve paid the right price for the building work you’ve had done.builder's plans

Extra Materials

Although it very rarely happens, a handful of builders often ask for more money if they find themselves short on material. If this is happening or has happened to you, then you’ve been ripped off. If the builder has given you a quote beforehand, you should expect them to stick with the initial value, as not doing so isn’t right.

Complex Color Palettes

Complex color palettes are a beautiful but complicated way to balance color in your design.  They can range from interesting and subtle to frenetic and unsettling. Complex color palettes combine warm and cool colors from all around the color wheel, often in different values.

Here are a couple of simple ways to achieve a successful complex color palette.

(1)    Start with a fabric or textile that already has a complex color palette. This could be subtle color palettesomething that has red, yellow and blue or orange, purple and green. Pull all the remaining colors for your design from the background of this.

The palette you start with might be from an area rug or a sectional.  Adding textural items to the mix that only have one of the colors makes your design more interesting and keeps the colors cohesive.  Examples of single color items with an interesting texture are grass cloth, damask, corduroy, jute, velvet or glass.

How to Get Insurance for Your Home Improvement Project

Although a home improvement project is intended to do just that, improve your home–unexpected things can happen along the way that can end up costing you a fortune. Fire, water damage, stolen tools and supplies, a storm, and a multitude of other disasters can turn your project upside-down right before your very eyes, leaving you in a mess that you’re just not equipped to deal with.

Whether your home improvement project is a DIY one or you’ve hired someone to do the work for you, it’s essential that you have adequate insurance to cover it in case things don’t go exactly as planned. If you’ve got a home improvement project on the horizon, here is what you need to do to make sure you’ve got the insurance to cover it.

Determine Your Project Needs

What types of improvements will you be making to your home? It’s important to take a close look at the projects you will be doing, what you will need to complete them, and what some of the potential risks may be. The next step will be to find out if any your plans are covered under your current home owner’s insurance policy.

Review Your Current Home Owner’s Insurance Policy

Before you start thinking about the additional insurance you might need for your home improvement project, take out your current home owner’s insurance policy and review it carefully. How to Bring some Spanish Flare into Your Home

If you live in the western U.S. or Southwest, you have probably had at least some contact with Spanish culture and Spanish design influences. Spanish history runs deep into American culture.

As such, many homeowners have turned away from more modern design elements to implement classic Spanish touches, like custom wood doors, to enrich their living spaces. Here are a few design ideas to bring some Spanish flare into your home.

Furniturebrightly colored Spanish vases

As with any home, furniture can change the entire look and feel of a single room. Outfitting your home with Spanish furniture is a must. The primary material used in Spanish furniture is wood. Some common types of wood include walnut, mahogany, cedar, and oak.

The wood is usually accented with other materials, like tortoise and oyster shells and even ivory. This provides a distinct contrast to the deep colors of the wood. Furniture can also be gilded with sheets of metal for added elegance.

One distinguishing characteristic of Spanish furniture is the size and shape. Pieces tend to be large and bulky. Chairs usually feature wide, tall backrests with thick legs. Cabinets and chests are also fairly large, allowing for more storage space.

Lighting Your Bathroom

Renovating your home is always an exciting prospect. If you’re in the process of putting together a plan to remodel the bathroom, one major area you should pay close attention to is how to light your bathroom properly. The right lighting can not only bring out the beauty of a remodeled bathroom but ensure you have sufficient light for applying makeup, shaving and any other daily routines you might have.

Watch Out For Shadows

This is probably the most important thing to keep in mind. If your lighting isn’t situated correctly, you could end up with deep shadows on your face while trying to use the mirror to get ready. For this reason, any lighting around the mirror should ideally be placed to either side of the mirror rather than above it. This will ensure the maximum amount of illumination for your face and avoid having your nose, brows or chin cast shadows.

To get the best bang for your buck, try using different lighting for different situations. For example, you might want to use accent lighting to set off the color of that gorgeous new tile you added to the bathroom or to highlight the decorations you’ve hung on the wall.

Use bright “task” lighting for the mirror to give you the most light when you really need it and perhaps add a dimmer switch to turn the lights down if you feel like relaxing in the tub after a long day at work.

Room Remodeling Easily and Affordably

In order to keep you home looking at its best, different rooms in your home need to undergo remodeling from time to time.  Some rooms in your home are higher traffic areas and will therefore need some remodeling sooner than others.  Although, you may not want to put out a lot of money into remodeling your home at this point, it is very important to keep up your home.

Neglecting improvements that need to be done or simply pushing things off for a later date will result in much higher remolding cost and often damage that is irreplaceable.   Say for example a crystal from your chandelier fell off and cracked, request a replacement part as soon as possible.  Procrastinating may result in the necessary piece being no longer unavailable which will result in have to replace the entire fixture.

The reason for procrastinating is often due to the expense involved with the remodeling. Yet there are many ways for so many of these projects to get done easily and affordably. Take your kitchen as an example. This room is usually the highest trafficked room in every home.

Painting

The next improvement that I would recommend that you do would be to repaint your room.  You can do this easily on your own.  Take each room separately.  Don’t plan on repainting your entire home on one Sunday alone.  Also, before you paint, have and expert, someone that knows paint colors well lend you a hand.  Choosing the right colors is very important.

Often you see a tiny swatch of paint and then when you paint an entire wall you find it to be a different color than what you had envisioned. Someone that is an expert can give you great ideas on how to give your room a complete makeover with the right paint colors.  You can choose to paint one of the four walls in the room a different color then the others.  This will give the room a new look and a new focal point lending new personality to the room.

Space in the City – Interior Design Tips for Smaller Properties

Although living in the centre of a city has its advantages, space usually isn’t one of them. Decorating a smaller flat can be a challenge, but sacrificing floor space for location doesn’t necessarily have to end your dreams of house beautiful.
terraced houses that have been converted into apartments

De-Clutter

First of all, de-clutter, recycle, throw out and give away anything you are unlikely to use ever again. It’s amazing how much we hold onto without thinking about it and if space is at a premium there’s no sense wasting it on things you don’t use.

Consider renting a storage unit for larger items that don’t fit into your life right now, and look for bed units and wardrobe tidies to make better use of the storage space you already have.

Colour Scheme

Think about your colour scheme before you buy anything. For smaller spaces simple themes are best, as mixing lots of colours together can make your home look mismatched and messy. Light shades and neutral tones will give more of a sense of space and make the best of natural light, and colour and detail can be added with smaller pieces that won’t overpower a cosy room. Consider using a single, light colour for walls throughout the properly to give it a continuous feel.
