Why I Love Having Net Curtains in my Home
I’d been craving a change of scenery for a while and I’m very pleased to say that I have finally moved house! Of course, I would like to kit my new home out with lots of new furniture but it’s still a work in progress. Rome wasn’t built in a day!
I decided that I’d spruce up some of my old favourites to fit in with the style of my new home. Along with new throws and cushions, I decided to give the windows in my new house a bit of a treat too and buy net curtains for each of them – I’ve got to say, the difference the nets make is amazing.
In fact, I’ve been so impressed with nets that I thought I’d share my experience and tell people why I think every home should include them and a bit of advice I’d give to anybody looking to buy them.
My net curtains pull together my décor and create a homely feel – I’d definitely recommend adding net curtains to a new home, just to soften the look and make the place your own. My new home is fairly modern and I’ve found that net curtains suit the décor really well. I have a friend who thought that net curtains are only for traditional homes; after seeing how well they complement my new home, she was forced to eat her words!
Another perk to having net curtains in your home is the improved privacy. My old home was in a fairly secluded location; however, now I’ve moved to a more densely populated area, I’m finding that privacy is a slight issue. As soon as I fit net curtains to my windows, the rest of the world is shut out.
(It’s also worth me pointing out that net curtains are very reasonably priced too!)
I bought all of my net curtains off the internet rather than nipping to my local shop – this just saved me time and a trip into town (where I would undoubtedly end up buying some new clothes after a bit of window shopping!).
To buy it online, I just had to measure the width of my window and the height. By measuring the window, I was able to work out what sort of gather I needed.
Work Out the Gather
For those of you who are unaware, the gather determines how ‘full’ the nets look – there is no correct amount of gather for a window, it all depends on what sort of look you would prefer. Usually, people tend to choose a gather of between 1.5 to 3 times the window’s width.
When selecting the right gather for my net curtains, I used 2.5 times the width of my window to achieve a fuller look. As my nets are plain and quite thin, I decided that a thicker gather would help with privacy issues (and would keep my new, inquisitive neighbours at bay!) and I personally prefer this look.
However, my parents have some lovely, patterned net curtains in their home and as they’re densely patterned, a really full gather would look a bit silly so they opted for a gather of just 1.5 and it looks lovely.
So there you have it, a bit of advice about net curtains and some of the reasons why I like them and would never be without them in my home!
